HOW TO GET A SPONSORSHIP JOB IN AUSTRALIA

March 09, 2017

Every job hunting project requires a lot of research work, which some people find hard to accomplish. Indeed, there is a lot (but sometimes not enough information) on the matter, and no wonder people end up being confused and disoriented.

I AM A BIG BELIEVER IN PROVIDING PEOPLE WITH FREE INFORMATION HENCE I AM GOING TO WALK YOU THROUGH EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

FIRST OF ALL, BEAR IN MIND, THAT THERE IS NO MAGIC PILL or some special trick someone would reveal for you just for $1000 and then you are guaranteed a job in Australia.

None is guaranteed a job, but everyone has a chance. It’s all about your research and analytical skills, as well as understanding of the sponsorship job market.

THE FIRST STEP IS TO SORT OUT YOUR CV
Before doing ANYTHING, sort out your CV. Ask for professional help and advice. Make sure you understand the logic behind the whole CV writing process and be aware of the CV writers who do not ask you a lot of questions. Prepare your CV BEFORE sending it to immigration agents, recruiters, potential employers or government agencies. Make sure you added all the keywords you found on the job descriptions in your CV and Cover Letter. This will rank your resume higher on database searches and increase your chances of getting an interview.

LINKEDIN
Unless you work in manual labour, or entry level of HORECA (hotel, restaurant, café), where your LinkedIn profile won’t be important – make sure that your LinkedIn is top notch.
Here is a short list of tips, if you want an extended version, do let me know.

• Before you get started, find out up front how many characters or keystrokes each field in LinkedIn allows
• Upload a headshot photo
• Claim your personal profile URL
• Use the headline space wisely because it shows up in Google search results along with your name and location, use this for important SEO related to your job or a future job
• Make sure your Summary includes all the keywords for your future job search
• Build up your network in the location you are aiming to
• Fill the rest of your profile with keywords
• Optimize your location so you will get on recruiters’ radars
• Join relevant LinkedIn groups
• Follow the company you are interested in getting into

BRING YOUR PROFILE TO THE TOP OF SEARCH RESULTS Since recruiters are constantly searching LinkedIn for candidates using keywords and job titles, you will want your profile to appear as high as possible in the results of those searches. After you have completed your profile to the 100% level, go to “Advanced People Search” Enter keywords that describe your targeted position. Enter your location. Hit “Search.”

Does your profile appear on one of the first few pages of results? Now open the profile of the person that appeared at top of the first page of the search results. The keywords that LinkedIn used to filter the search will be highlighted.

VISA
Find out if you qualify for a 457 visa by completing a visa assessment on the government website or/and consult with an Immigration Agent. There is more than one way to apply for a 457 Visa, make sure you are aware of all your visa options before you start applying for jobs as this will give you a big advantage.

FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT AN EXPERT – REGISTERED MIGRATION AGENT. How to find them? Google – immigration to Australia and compare rates and ask reviews. Include your visa options in your cover letter. This will show you did your homework and know what your options are.

RESEARCH YOUR POTENTIAL SALARY
In order to get an idea of an average salary you would want to check http://www.payscale.com/
Also, it might be a good idea to google ‘salary report recruitment agency Australia’ and get information of
Hudson - http://au.hudson.com/salary-hub/salary-guides
Hays - https://www.hays.com.au/salary-guide/
Michael page - http://www.michaelpage.com.au/salary-centre
People Bank - https://www.peoplebank.com.au/salary-index
and others.

UNDERSTAND HOW TO FIND COMPANIES WHICH SPONSOR
First of all, you need to remember that not all the companies are able to sponsor people from overseas.
Finding those who are willing and able to do this is the main trick.

1. YOU CAN PUT IN AN EXPRESSION OF INTEREST using SkillSelect - http://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Work/Skil

2. GO TO THE BIGGEST JOB BOARDS AND RUN SEARCH USING ‘SPONSORSHIP’ OR ‘SPONSORED’ KEYWORDS TO FIND COMPANIES WHICH SPONSOR
Here is the list of the most popular job boards: http://www.ici.edu.au/…/the-best-20-australian-job-and-car…/

YOU CAN RUN BOOLEAN STRING in the search filed, and try different variations, such as,
• Sponsorship AND Mechanic
• Sponsor AND Engineer
• 457 AND Chef

3. DO YOUR RESEARCH ON SPECIFIC JOB BOARDS providing information on job opportunities for non-residents AND WORK WITH AGENCIES WHICH SPECIALISE IN THIS SPACE.

GETTING AN INTERVIEW
Despite the fact that technologies allow us nowadays to conduct remote interviews and meet online, Australian employers still do prefer to meet people face-to-face. You might get lucky if you have a unique set of skills, but you have much better chances once you are in the country.

APPROACHING DECISION MAKERS
While it’s seemingly okay to walk-in, if you are looking for a job in retail or manual construction, do not walk-in to agencies, you will only piss-off busy people. Send your CV, follow up with the call and try to get an appointment. Besides, keep in mind, that majority of recruitment agencies deal with job roles which DO NOT provide sponsorship options, so it’s a good idea to target your search.
